Largest Gift Ever to Duke University Medical Center

The Duke Endowment of Charlotte is giving $50 million to the Duke University Medical Center to help build a medical education facility and to develop a state-of-the-art inpatient facility for pediatric patients, announced Duke President Richard H. Brodhead and Chancellor for Health Affairs Victor J. Dzau. This is the largest single gift received by the Duke University Medical Center. Read more.

The Duke Endowment Gives $40 Million for New Faculty Positions at Duke

The Duke Endowment of Charlotte is giving $40 million to Duke University to create more than 30 new faculty positions, university President Richard H. Brodhead announced. All of the new positions will support scholars of distinction who are expected to make innovative contributions to undergraduate education. Read more.

Duke Announces Nearly $7 Million in Enhancements
for Need-Based Aid Recipients

Building on the strength of giving to Duke's Financial Aid Initiative, the performance of the university's endowment assets, and the expectation of additional support for financial aid endowment as the Financial Aid Initiative enters its final year, the Board of Trustees approved an investment of nearly $7 million per year in financial aid enhancements.

The increased investment in financial aid will make it possible for students from families with incomes below $40,000 to graduate debt-free and will eliminate parental contributions for families making less than $60,000 a year. In addition, Duke will reduce loan requirements for all students who qualify for need-based aid. The changes take effect in the fall of 2008 and are expected to benefit about 2,500 students. Duke Launches Civic Engagement Initiative

In one of the most ambitious efforts of its kind in U.S. higher education, Duke University will make civic engagement an integral part of its undergraduate experience beginning in 2008, university president Richard H. Brodhead announced Monday.

Duke’s new program, DukeEngage, will provide full funding and faculty and administrative support to all undergraduates who want to stretch beyond the classroom by tackling societal issues at home and abroad, and, in turn, learning from those real-world experiences. Now Certain Life Income Gifts Can Be Managed With Duke’s Endowment

Donors can now have charitable remainder trusts invested by Duke Management Company (DUMAC), the independent corporation that manages the university’s endowment. Gift of S$80 Million to the Duke-National University of Singapore

The Estate of Tan Sri Khoo Teck Puat announced a gift of S$80 million to the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School Singapore to grow the school’s biomedical research initiatives. The gift, the largest single donation granted by the estate to date, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore government, bringing the total sum to S$160 million. Read more.

Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health Receives $5 Million

Duke University's Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health has received a $5 million gift from the Hubert Family Trust of Atlanta, Duke President Richard H. Brodhead announced.  The gift is the second from the Hubert Family Trust to the center, which partners with clinical and research groups in developing countries to improve health by teaching students and health care professionals and by supporting collaborative research intended to reduce the burden of disease. Osher Foundation Supports Lifelong Learning at Duke

The Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco, Calif. has contributed $1 million to the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement, President Richard H. Brodhead announced. In recognition of the gift, the university’s Board of Trustees voted to rename the institute the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University.

Durham community and business leaders and Duke University on Thursday announced a record $412,000 in donations to the Duke-Durham Campaign, an annual fund-raising effort that benefits neighborhoods and public schools closest to Duke's campus.

Duke Celebrates Record Alumni Support During Reunion

Five classes have already broken records for alumni giving, President Richard Brodhead has announced, and alumni still have until June 30 to make a reunion gift.

 

Duke to Raise $300 Million for Financial Aid Endowment

On December 1, 2005, President Richard Brodhead announced a university-wide effort to raise $300 million in endowment for financial aid by the end of 2008—$245 million for undergraduate scholarships and $55 million for graduate and professional school students.  To help Duke meet this goal, a small group of donors has committed $100 million in challenge funds.  New financial aid endowment gifts at qualifying levels may now be matched dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the impact of these commitments.

 

GSK Funds $1.65 Million for Public Health Partnership

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation has awarded $1.65 million to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University for a collaborative partnership to address four pressing local and global health care concerns. They arequality of care and patient safety, health disparities, global health with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS and mental health care.

 

Nasher Museum Makes First Purchase of Art

The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University has made its first purchase of art -- a sculpture by New York-based artist Petah Coyne. The newly purchased work is “Untitled #1111 (Little Ed’s Daughter Margaret),” an 11-foot assemblage of tree branches, feathers, ribbon, thread, tassels -– and hundreds of silk flowers dipped in a specially formulated midnight blue wax.

The museum chose the sculpture after Coyne lent another, similar work, “Untitled #1165 (Paris Blue),” for one of the museum’s inaugural exhibitions. That exhibition, “The Forest: Politics, Poetics, and Practice,” is on view through Jan. 29.
